MARITIME UK SW OCTOBER UPDATE

Partners from across South West submitted an ambitious Future Ocean Institute positioning document to government’s comprehensive spending review at the end of September. The outline plan focuses on marine autonomy and other smart, clean maritime technologies. The paper aligns with a wider  £1BN Maritime UK bid to decarbonise the sector and the growing potential of floating offshore wind in the South West, a bid for which is being worked and up will be submitted in November.  
Maritime UK South West continues its programme of marine technology online events with a Why invest and collaborate in the South West event and video which is being presented as part of Maritime Week and SeaTech week in France. To sign up visit the Maritime UK SW news page.
The strength of the Maritime UK South West autonomy and geospatial data cluster has recently been recognised also, by the award from the Department of Investment and Trade of a High Potential Opportunity investment programme for the region. Work on the programme has begun and aims to be complete by Spring 2021.

WEBINAR: TIDAL ENERGY SUPPLY CHAIN SERIES – 3 EVENTS IN OCTOBER

The Tidal Stream Industry Energiser (TIGER) project has successfully delivered the first two of its interactive supply chain engagement webinars focussing on collaboration between supply chain and technology developers with over 470 delegates engaged from all over the world to date. The four remaining webinars will be held throughout October and will focus on the following topics;

WEBINAR: MOORING AND ANCHORING SOLUTIONS

GRANTS: EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY – MARINE ENERGY

ESA Space Solutions will provide funding to successful teams looking to investigate the technical feasibility and economic viability of space-based applications in support of marine energy solutions, and define a roadmap for services implementation and demonstration. The activities will be 100% funded up to 150K per activity. Closing date 17th   November 2020

INNOVATION CONSULTANCY GRANT FUND – DEVON ONLY

The Innovation Consultancy Grant Fund is an ERDF funded programme that supports high-tech, Devon-based, Advanced Marine businesses accelerate their innovative projects.
The Grant is available to provide financial assistance to SMEs that access professional expertise needed to develop their innovative projects. Businesses that wish to be considered for funding should submit details of their project directly to the MBTC by the  closing date of 30th  October 2020.

112M EURO HORIZON 2020 CALLS: SMART CLEAN PORTS AND DIGITAL TWIN OF THE OCEAN

The Horizon 2020 Green Deal programme offers several funding calls for ocean technology two of which are well suited to expertise from Maritime Uk South West.

DIGITAL TWINS OF THE OCEAN – 15M EURO

EVENT: NOC MARINE AUTONOMY AND TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE 2020

During MATS 2020, the aim is to explore the information needs of users of Marine Autonomous Systems (MAS), review the current technologies available to enable the data gathering for MAS users and explore the methods of taking that data and making it exploitable information for the user need. Call for abstracts and exhibitors is live.  10-12th Nov 2020.

EVENTS: MARITIME UK WEEK

A growing number of events are currently being added to the Maritime UK Week programme which is designed to showcase and celebrate the strength of the sector. The programme includes two events from the Maritime UK South West; the Why Invest and Collaborate with Maritime UK South West event on Wednesday 14th October and a careers event aimed at informing careers leads within schools scheduled for Monday 12th.

SPECIALIST SUPPORT FOR MARINE EXPORTERS

The Department for International Trade (DIT) have appointed a marine sector specialist to help businesses across the Great South West (covering the Heart of the South West, Dorset and Cornwall & Isles of Scilly LEPs) looking to export their products and services internationally.

CAREERS: CALL FOR AMBASSADORS, SW VIDEO PRODUCED, 3 EVENTS PLANNED.

Maritime UK had launched their campaign to recruit industry ambassadors to support careers activity in schools and colleges. This was a priority identified by the Department for Transport in the People Route Map. Could you be one of our new volunteer ambassadors working with schools and colleges to help the next generation learn about the exciting and rewarding careers that maritime has to offer? We are recruiting maritime people to help us spread the word about maritime careers from all the different industries in the sector. MARRI-UK SMART MARITIME LAND OPERATIONS WORKSHOP

MarRI-UK Smart Maritime Land Operations, 5th October 2020 10.30 – 12.30,  The online event will provide details on the DfT Funded Smart Maritime Land Operations (SMLO) potential programme and seek participant views on key challenges and priorities to be addressed and enable participants to develop potential ideas in advance of a formal request for expressions of interest / proposals from MarRI-UK.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
