MARITIME UK SW - CLEAN MARITIME PROGRAM

Maritime UK SW has internationally significant strengths in environmental technologies, advanced engineering and ocean science and therefore is well placed to respond to the low carbon challenge. Maritime UK has numerous work strands dedicated to this area, including creation of a Clean Maritime Roadmap, establishing local charging/e-propulsion ecosystems, national innovation activity on propulsion, work on an annual clean marine tech event with MDL Marinas in June 21, and the development of a SW Innovation Service.

COP26 INTERNATIONAL MARITIME HUB

Maritime UK and City of Glasgow College have partnered to deliver the COP26 International Maritime Hub at the college’s Riverside Campus. The hub will convene the global industry and showcase the UK’s contribution to the sector’s transition to Net Zero.

MUKSW SOUTH WEST AQUACULTURE NETWORK (SWAN) CONFERENCE 28TH OCTOBER, DORSET

The South West Aquaculture Network held its AGM and first conference on Thursday 28th October 2021 at Kingston Maurward College near Dorchester. 

TECHNOLOGY AND SOLUTIONS TO ENHANCE THE CAPABILITY OF MARITIME MISSION SYSTEMS

The iX Challenge competition, delivered by KTN, is supporting BAE Systems Surface Ships to identify innovative solutions to enhance and enrich the Maritime Mission Systems marketplace. 

PKF FRANCIS CLARK SME FUNDING WEBINAR

As the Covid support loan schemes have come to an end it is time to reappraise the funding and business support eco-system for SMEs. On the 25th November PKF Francis Clark will hold a webinar where panellists will give an overview of funding and business support available for SMEs in Devon and Somerset (Heart of the South West LEP area) and insights into future opportunities..

FILM COVERING THE SMART SOUND AND FUTURE AUTONOMOUS AT SEA TECHNOLOGIES (FAST) CLUSTER

The use of autonomous ocean-going vessels, SMART platforms and other maritime technologies are in focus as part of a short film from IMarEST and ITN Productions, featuring the Future Autonomous at Sea Technologies (FAST) Cluster and SmartSound Plymouth.

Open Doors’ is a new initiative and an opportunity for you to speak directly to one of the highly qualified academic researchers and marine experts employed through marine-I  at a time convenient to you. 

INNOVATE UK SMART GRANTS

Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘open grant funding’ programme.

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. All proposals must be business focused.

Applications can come from any area of technology and be applied to any part of the economy, such as, but not exclusively:

  • the arts, design and media
  • creative industries
  • science or engineering

NEW MARITIME SKILLS CENTRE BOASTS ONE-OF-A-KIND EQUIPMENT

It has been four years in the making and represents an investment of close to £2million, but City College’s flagship Centre for Higher Technical Innovation and Maritime Skills (TIMS) is now officially open.

Located at the heart of Plymouth’s marine industry and standing just a stone’s throw from the water, the new teaching site at the Marine Enterprise Zone at Oceansgate marks the start of a new chapter in the College’s ongoing support of Plymouth’s crucial industries.

INDUSTRIAL FUEL SWITCHING COMPETITION

The £55 million Industrial Fuel Switching competition will support innovation in the development of pre-commercial fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technology for the industrial sector, to help industry switch from high to lower carbon fuels. Funding will be awarded through Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) contracts, providing 100% funding for pre-commercial solutions.

NORTH DEVON MARINE TECH EVENT 25TH NOV

For marine businesses this free event will provide information on a wide range of activity in the marine sector in the region. From training routes, R&D tax credits, how to access Innovate UK grants and setting up Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with universities through to updates from both Exeter and Plymouth universities, Harland & Wolff, details on offshore opportunities ahead and even aquaculture- there really is a lot for everyone who works in the marine sector!

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
