Next week Maritime UK Week 2022 gets underway! The week will shine a spotlight on the latest developments in the maritime sector and engage people across the UK with the world of maritime.

With over 40 events being held across the UK for both maritime professionals and the general public, there is something for everyone no matter where you are in the UK.

Marine sector to benefit from more support from Marine Business Technology Centre

New funding means the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) in Plymouth will operate for another 12 months, providing valuable innovation support to businesses in the Devon. Based in Plymouth’s Oceansgate development, the MBTC has supported nearly 400 businesses since it was established in 2018.

The MBTC is a partnership led by Plymouth City Council with the Marine Biological Association (MBA), Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), the University of Plymouth and the University of Exeter.

Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 and Regional Coordination Events

To mark this year’s World Maritime Day (29 September 2022), Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan announced £60M funding for the third round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), which will run from April 2023 to March 2025 and help innovative companies and scientists make emission-free maritime a reality. 

UK companies will be able to bid for a slice of the funding to supercharge the development of early-stage clean maritime technologies for wider use in the future.

Also announced today are the winning projects from the second round of the CMDC, launched in May 2022, which saw £12 million shared between 121 UK companies.

A series of regional events is being coordinated via Maritime UK Regional Clusters, to find out more visit.

10 Year COAST Lab Anniversary Celebration and Launch of the Centre for Decarbonisation and ORE

Welcoming HMS Quorn to Appledore

HMS Quorn recently arrived with Harland & Wolff (Appledore) after a journey from Portsmouth Harbour. In July, H&W were awarded a £55 million contract to regenerate a former Royal Navy mine-hunting vessel, HMS QUORN.

On behalf of the Lithuanian Government, the Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA) awarded the contract that will see HMS QUORN renovated and restored, bolstering NATO maritime capability in Europe.

Plymouth Marine Laboratory project awarded UKERC Flexible Research Fund

The UK has plans to increase offshore wind capacity to 50 GW by 2030. This will require an understanding of the trade-offs between climate change and the multiple uses of marine natural resources. This project will work with renewable industry and policy bodies to enable evidence-based, informed actions to improve decision making when balancing environmental, social, and economic impacts, ensuring marine net gain as part of national policy assessments.

The Plymouth and South Devon (PASD) Freeport September update

The Plymouth and South Devon (PASD) Freeport is the result of a successful bid submitted in February 2021, with an Outline Business Case (OBC) submitted in November 2021. The Freeport became officially active in May 2022 with Government approval of the OBC and the approval and designation of two Tax Sites (Sherford and Devonport South Yard).

Boost for floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea in the mini-budget

In an announcement on 23 September 2022, the UK Government made it clear that, not only is Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) an essential technology for achieving long-term energy security for the UK, but it also wants to speed up the way in which planning policy is implemented, to allow FLOW technology to be deployed more rapidly.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
