£1.2m invested in new Plymouth underwater communications network

The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has announced that Smart Sound Plymouth is to benefit from a £1.2 million investment, to upgrade the offshore infrastructure and further enhance the unique proving ground for businesses to test, trial, prototype and commercialise new products and services.

National recruitment campaign for Plymouth and South Devon Freeport launches

The recruitment of a permanent Chair, and other key roles including permanent CEO and senior level management opportunities is a crucial process in the launch of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport. Following a tender process national recruiters, Penna, are responsible for the search for the Freeport’s new Chair.

EVENT: Floating Offshore Wind and Green Hydrogen – the Opportunity Ahead, 30th Nov, Falmouth

Cornwall FLOW Accelerator in conjunction with Marine-i and Celtic Sea Cluster are organising an in-person event to explore Green Hydrogen, its potential for commercial application and exploitation in the context of Floating Offshore Wind in the Celtic Sea. The event will take place on 30th November 2022 and will be held at the Sennen Conference Suite in The Innovation Centre on the University of Exeter Penryn campus. It will run between 9.30am – 15.30pm.

HRH Princess Royal visits PML for launch of National Centre for Coastal Autonomy

The potential for autonomous technology to advance understanding of our constantly evolving ocean and coastlines has taken a major step forward with the launch of the National Centre for Coastal Autonomy.

Invitation: Satellite enabled growth in the transport sector, with Transport Minister Baroness Vere, 12th Oct

You are invited to an online event exploring how the UK are using satellite technology to modernise our transport system, DfT’s role in commercial spaceflight, and why sovereign launch capabilities matter to the UK, and the transport sector specifically.
 
We will be joined by Aviation and Local Transport Minister Baroness Vere, who will introduce the session.

A trailblazing course has been launched in Dorset for businesses to understand and embrace the business benefits of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) best practice. Dorset Chamber is running the free ‘The Business Case for ESG’ programme over the next six months with online sessions open to all firms, countywide.

ORE Catapult Launch Academy 2023 - Now Accepting Applications! (Deadline 30th November)

Launch Academy supports the commercialisation of UK-based SMEs as they seek to introduce innovative new products and services into the offshore wind industry. The Launch Academy is independent and neutral, and its unparalleled industry knowledge, combined with wide stakeholder engagement experience at all levels of the value chain, means it is well-versed in the technology challenges and opportunities that exist in the sector.

Working with our Launch Academy partners, they have identified a series of technology challenges, the solutions to which could provide the products and services of the future. 

Event: Marine Autonomy & Technology Showcase (MATS) - Southampton and Online, 8-10 November

During MATS 2022, the aim is to explore the information needs of users of Marine Autonomous Systems (MAS), review the current technologies available to enable the data gathering for MAS users and explore the methods of taking that data and making it exploitable information for the user need. Presentations will focus on work undertaken or planned to be undertaken in the 12 months since MATS 2021. New for 2022 there will be a new theme added on Sustainability and Net Zero Capability.

Celtic Sea Cluster Workforce Working Group

  • Two parallel working groups have been set up under the floating offshore wind cluster
    • 1) “Demand” group, made up of developers and industry to articulate the requirements: number and type of job and when they will be required
    • 2) “Supply” group, of training providers and local stakeholders to prepare a pipeline of talent able to fulfil these requirements within the region.
  • Modelling work is now underway to map out this demand and how the supply can meet it. This will help form a regional strategy to maximise the number of skilled FLOW careers in the region.

Cutting Edge Smart Sound Connect Control Centre Opens

Following on from the successful launch of Smart Sound Connect earlier this year, today marks the opening of a state-of-the-art control centre for the network to further enhance the support provided to industry as part of the Smart Sound testing and proving ground based in and around Plymouth Sound.  The network was recently recognised by the Mobile sector by receiving the 2022 Mobile Industry Award for 5G Innovation of the Year (Product/Service).

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
