How to get involved with the work of Maritime UK

Maritime UK South West is affiliated with the national cluster Maritime UK, which is the umbrella body for the maritime sector, bringing together the shipping, ports, services, engineering and leisure marine industries. Together our purpose is to champion and enable a thriving maritime sector and we also have responsibility for the coordination and delivery of industry recommendations within the Maritime 2050 strategy.

Our work is focused on five key areas: people, competitiveness, innovation, regional growth and the environment. Across all, there are ways to get stuck in. These range from joining working groups, submitting case studies and being an industry ambassador inspiring the next generation

Event Northern Devon Marine - Floating Offshore Wind opportunities ahead 13th May

An event to raise awareness of the forthcoming Celtic Sea Floating Offshore Wind opportunities and the potential for your business to be part of a future supply chain. Hear from Regen (leading environmental consultants) about the outcomes of a detailed study into the potential for businesses opportunity across the SW to access the supply chain as well as Innovate UK, floating offshore wind and tidal stream energy developers and key industry bodies.

Green Tech Boatshow & Clean Marine Innovation showcase 16-18th June

Following the success of the first Green Tech Boat Show last year, the show will take place again this year at its Queen Anne’s Battery, Plymouth, 16-18 June 2022. In 2022 the first day of the Green Tech Boat Show will be focussed exclusively on clean marine innovation, “The Clean Marine Innovation Showcase” will create a unique forum for government, research and business to come together to exchange ideas, showcase new innovations, network and do business. On the agenda – UKShore a £130M programme to decarbonise maritime, Sail GP, Composite Recycling, investment masterclass, how to access R&D tax credits.

Horizon Europe Overview - draft 2023 calls

With a combined research budget of 15 billion Euro and a dedicated network to bring forward maritime innovation Horizon Europe is worth a look. The calls for 2022 will soon be submitted but we have a draft of what next years programme might look to help form ideas and partnerships for next years programme. 

Innovation in time resilience, dissemination and application - feasibility

Innovate UK is working with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to invest up to £4.7 million in innovation projects that contribute to resilient time, frequency and synchronisation (TFS) and its dissemination and application.

Clean Maritime Demo Competition Showcase Event

In March 2021, the Department for Transport (DfT) launched the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, which allocated over £23m of research and development funding to 55 projects across the UK.

The CMDC supported the design and development of zero emission shipping technologies and greener ports through a series of technology trials and feasibility studies to accelerate maritime decarbonisation. The competition ended in March 2022.

To celebrate the achievements of the CMDC, DfT, Innovate UK and Innovate UK KTN are hosting a final showcase event on the 24th May at Portsmouth International Port. 

Innovation Loans Future Economy Competition – Round 1

Innovate UK is offering up to £25 million in loans to micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Loans are for highly innovative late stage research and development (R&D) projects with the best potential for the future. There should be a clear route to commercialisation and economic impact.

Smart Sound Plymouth - MASG Seminar

Gain an insight into what exciting projects the Smart Sound Plymouth are working on and get an update on their Wolfson Foundation funding.

The Smart Sound facilitates trials, validation and proving of marine innovative technologies across a diverse environment. All missions will be facilitated by a dedicated team in compliance with MAS codes of conduct and de-conflicted with other water users. From trials in shallow benign environments to deeper hostile waters Smart Sound can facilitate a wide range of conditions to suit the user’s particular requirements.

Industry Workshop on Celtic Sea FLOW: Lifecycle of a floating wind farm

Floating Offshore Wind industry focused workshop exploring themes relating to the lifecycle of a FLOW farm. Fri, 8 July 2022  09:30 – 14:30

An evolution of the 2 day research conference PRIMaRE (Partnership for Research in Marine Renewable Energy) that is being hosted by Exeter University this year, this FLOW lifecycle workshop is an industry focused day that will facilitate collaborative thinking between research and industry on floating offshore wind (FLOW). The key aim is to identify and explore opportunities within the themes of:

• Anchoring and Moorings

• Ports

• Marine Operations

Maritime Decarbonisation and the UK Ports response via Clean Maritime Demonstrator Projects Webinar

To explore perspectives and inspire the supply chain to learn from relevant Clean Maritime Demonstrator projects underway in Ports which focus on:

Port of Tyne and Renewable Microgrids 

Port of Aberdeen and Shore Power

Portsmouth International Port and Hydrogen & Vessel Refit

Breakfast Business Meeting at the now open MoD Defence BattleLab Innovation Centre, Dorset Innovation Park, Thursday 9th June 2022. The BattleLab Innovation Centre provides a virtual and physical community, allowing collaborators the opportunity to access offices, conference rooms, 5G network and MoD end users, engineering workshop, testing ranges with cleared air and sea space.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
