Maritime UK Innovation Showcase, Hull, 9th March

Hosted in Humberside, on the day of the Maritime UK Awards to be held in Hull the event will showcase the maritime assets and opportunities in the region including regional research, the Humber Freeport and news from the regional maritime cluster.  
The event will include: 
–    Keynotes from Tom Chant MBE, Chief Executive of the Society for Maritime Industries and Robin Mortimer, Chief Executive of Port of London Authority 
–   News from the £206M UK SHORE investment in clean maritime

Maritime UK congratulate all the winners (particularly those from the South West!) and look forward to helping more bids come together through subsequent consortia building events such as the event held in Poole on 21st Feb to promote the the £60M ZEVI funding and EPSRC Hub

Celtic Sea Cluster: Seize the Opportunity of Celtic Sea FLOW: Guidance for SMEs

The webinar series will provide the latest overview of the Celtic Sea FLOW and provide practical advice to businesses seeking to enter this market. The event will be hosted online and, though primarily aimed at SMEs in Cornwall, will be of relevance to other UK supply-chain companies.

Maritime BIM Bootcamp, Southampton, 21-22 June 2023

Unlocking the full potential of Building Information Management within the Maritime sector MaritimeUK together with the Society of Maritime Industries, British Port Association and Royal HaskoningDHV are pleased to announce the launch of our Maritime BIM Bootcamp in 2023 – An interactive two-day workshop that aims to unlock the potential of Building Information Management (BIM) for the entire maritime industry.

By bringing together the maritime supply chain, we will look to plot the journey we will all need to follow to create a fully collaborative BIM integrated industry aligned with the Maritime 2050 strategy. Throughout the two-day workshop, we will take a detailed look at the current state of affairs, share success stories and establish what we can learn from more BIM mature industries. This will provide us with the platform to establish the goals on how we will all move forward together with BIM integration at the core of the full project lifecycle. 

£5.5M Tranship II Project to see major UK Research Vessel Powered by Hydrogen

The Centre for Future Clean Mobility (CFCM) is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 (CMDC3), which was announced in September 2022, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. As part of the CMDC3, the Department allocated £60m to 19 flagship projects supported by 92 UK organisations to deliver real world demonstration R&D projects in clean maritime solutions. Projects will take place in multiple locations around the UK from as far north as the Shetland Isles and as far south as Cornwall.

National Careers Week Opportunity, Dartmoor Trust Careers Fair - 8th & 9th March 2022 – Ashbury Hotel, Okehampton

Maritime UK are working with Maritime UK South West to attend the Dartmoor Trust Careers Fair during National Careers Week. This event will be the largest of its kind in North and West Devon and will bring together students from a wide geographical area. Over 2500 students across years 9 – 12 are expected to attend.

New report identifies pathway for £75bn for UK shipping's energy transition

Recommendations on priority areas of focus are intended to contribute to the next iteration of the UK government’s Clean Maritime Plan:

  • Specific sectors of the UK maritime sector such as ferries, offshore service vessels and the offshore wind market present an opportunity for priority action and targeted measures
  • New sources of capital will be required to fund the industry’s decarbonisation transition
  • Institutional investors could be a viable source of funding with the appropriate government support
  • Specific funding mechanisms (illustrated through case studies) can help to overcome the barriers to investment

World’s First Co-Located Seaweed and Offshore Wind Farm

PML will be providing independent analysis of the Amazon-funded North Sea Farm 1 project, which is a first-of-its-kind seaweed farm located amongst offshore wind turbines. PML’s role in this innovative project is to establish the role offshore seaweed farming could play in capturing and storing carbon in the future.

Currently contributing £116bn+ to the UK economy within a $3tn global industry, there’s a clear opportunity for new thinking and strategies to help this sector expand as we unlock change-making technologies for our oceans, ports, and inland waterways.

Great South West Regional Launch

  • The GSW Partnership will be running a series of local launch events over the next 6 months or so across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset to share the Great South West’s emerging ambitions and priorities for the region with the first one starting in Taunton, Somerset on the 29 March from 2.30 – 4.30pm.  Over the coming months events will also be held in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset.

Call for abstracts: Cyber-SHIP Lab Annual Symposium 2023 at the IMO

We invite researchers working in maritime cyber security and related fields to submit abstracts for consideration for presentation on Day-one of the Cyber-SHIP Lab Annual Symposium 2023. The Symposium will take place 1-2 November 2023 at the International Maritime Organization in London (IMO). For the second consecutive year, the IMO is supporting the Symposium by co-hosting and participation.

University of Plymouth hosts Ukraine delegation for talks about long-term partnership

The University of Plymouth and State University of Infrastructure and Technology (SUIT) in Kyiv signed a formal twinning agreement in May 2022. Representatives from the State University of Infrastructure and Technology (SUIT) in Kyiv have made their first visit to the University of Plymouth. The two organisations signed a formal twinning agreement in May 2022 as part of the #TwinForHope campaign launched by Universities UK and the Cormack Consultancy Group.

2023 Maritime UK Awards and SW Nominees

The 2023 Maritime UK Awards are to be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull on Thursday 9 March. Maritime UK is grateful to ABP who are Diamond Sponsors for the Awards. Each year the Maritime UK Awards rotate around the UK, having visited Plymouth, Portsmouth and Glasgow so far, the 2023 Awards visit Hull.

Held for the first time in September 2019, the Maritime UK Awards are run by the industry for the benefit of the industry. 

This year, Maritime UK’s Patron HRH The Princess Royal will join 600 industry colleagues and partners in government for an evening to celebrate the wonderful world of maritime and the fantastic progress being made by organisations across the sector in support of Maritime 2050.  

The awards follow the first Maritime 2050 Innovation Forum, being held locally ahead of the awards on 9 March.

Interreg France (Channel) England programme Annual Event 16th March, Eden Project, Cornwall, UK

The FCE programme, managed by Norfolk County Council, has funded 51 high quality co-operation projects aimed at delivering economic, environmental, and social growth across the Channel area of the UK and France.
Over its lifetime the Programme has committed €228.2 million to a wide range of projects, which support innovation, developing low carbon technologies and improving the attractiveness of the FCE area.

Maritime UK to inspire girls to consider STEM careers in Maritime

Maritime UK is to deliver a nationwide ‘roadshow’ to inspire girls to consider Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers in the maritime sector.

Maritime UK has been awarded £100,000 in grant funding from the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) to deliver a Maritime Roadshow for Girls throughout 2023. The roadshow will aim to encourage Key Stage 3 girls to choose STEM subjects and to give the students greater awareness of career opportunities across the maritime industry.

Simulator transforms research into marine and maritime installations

The new technology will be used on research in sectors such as offshore renewable energy and clean maritime. 
A state-of-the-art facility which could play a critical role in the global offshore renewable energy sectors has been installed at the University of Plymouth.
The Maritime Simulation Laboratory brings together a network of high-tech components that can be used to run a series of maritime scenarios in real time.
At its heart is a Kongsberg K-Sim Dynamic Positioning simulator, which will initially be used to simulate, test and optimise marine operations throughout the lifecycle of floating offshore wind (FLOW) installations.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
