Maritime UK SW is a partnership supported and led by South West public, research and business organisations.  

The mission of Maritime UK SW is to bring together the breadth of our regional ocean economy, working in partnership to champion, grow and clean the sector.

Every year we publish our achievements in the past year and plans for next. This provides a workplan for partners interested in promoting themselves via cluster communications and also in partnering in cluster activity.

Event Northern Devon Marine - Floating Offshore Wind opportunities ahead 13th May

An event to raise awareness of the forthcoming Celtic Sea Floating Offshore Wind opportunities and the potential for your business to be part of a future supply chain. Hear from Regen about the outcomes of a detailed study into the potential for businesses across the Heart of the South West to access the supply chain as well as Innovate UK, floating offshore wind developers and key industry bodies.

Green Tech Boatshow & Clean Marine Innovation showcase 16-18th June

Following the success of the first Green Tech Boat Show last year, the show will take place again this year at its Queen Anne’s Battery, Plymouth, 16-18 June 2022. In 2022 the first day of the Green Tech Boat Show will be focussed exclusively on clean marine innovation, “The Clean Marine Innovation Showcase” will create a unique forum for government, research and business to come together to exchange ideas, showcase new innovations, network and do business.

Global Business Innovation Programme - Innovate UK

The Global Business Innovation Programme, organised by Innovate UK and delivered by Innovate UK EDGE, consists of a preparation phase, a 5-day Innovation Visit focused on Canada, a follow-up Exploitation Workshop, and bespoke one-to-one support from an Innovate UK EDGE Innovation and Growth Specialist, helping your business maximise the opportunities identified, including developing innovation projects with partners in the territory.

Solutions are sought by BEIS, offshore wind developers and others that can either:

  • Neutralise the UXO in a better, safer and cheaper way than current methods achieve; or
  • Reduce the impact on marine fauna and the wider environment of currently used methods

Finalists announced for 2022 Maritime UK Awards

Maritime UK  has announced the 32 finalists for the third annual Maritime UK Awards. The winners, across 14 different categories, will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony hosted by award-winning broadcaster, Jennifer Reoch, at the Glasgow Science Centre on 10 March. 

Places still available at Marine-i Innovation Accelerator Programme

Marine-i has announced that limited places are still available at its three-part coaching programme designed to help local businesses bring their innovation ideas to market. This new programme is aimed at small or medium sized businesses in Cornwall who have an interest in marine technology. The programme is free to eligible businesses.

Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Masterclass 22 March

The primary objective of the workshop will be to raise awareness and understanding of the performance and limitations of positioning and timing systems; and to provide information on steps to take to improve performance and resilience.

In addition, the workshop will include a look at positioning and timing sources including new approaches such as low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite constellations and other “sensors of opportunity” such as cameras and audio.

Marine-i offers fully funded visit to National Renewable Energy Centre

Marine-i, the ongoing marine technology programme, is offering businesses in Cornwall the opportunity to visit the advanced testing facilities available at the National Renewable Energy Centre (NREC) in Blyth, Northumberland.

Cornish businesses, particularly those in marine tech or related sectors such as manufacturing, electronics or 3D printing, are encouraged to take part in the free testing capacity available at the NREC.

Maritime UK announces plans for National Careers Week

Maritime UK today announces its plans to promote the maritime sector during National Careers Week (NCW). The annual week-long celebration of careers guidance and engagement runs from 7 to 12 March 2022.

SMART SKILLS Advisers are on hand to guide you through the skills and training options available to your business and link you with the relevant training options for your organisation. Help is also available for unemployed people to gain new skills! 

The UK Tradeshow Programme from the Department for International Trade

The programme offers government support to help UK businesses successfully attend or exhibit at selected overseas trade shows.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
