New Chair and co-chairs appointed to Maritime UK South West

I am delighted to have been made Chair of Maritime UK South West, and huge thanks to Anthony Payne for all that he’s done over the first 7 years of the cluster’s work.  There is a story here, and I first met Anthony and others from across the South West in San Diego in 2015 on one of the first of many Maritime UK SW trade missions. Ironically it took a trade mission overseas to bring stakeholders from across the South West together and since this time we have made great strides forward in building a working partnership that has created evidence to demonstrate our combined strategic investment opportunities in the region, lobbying into government and building a great network via a series of events and communications, which has contributed to far higher profile for our sector and a string of investments including great success in the recent clean maritime calls, the recent £15.6 million for a clean maritime innovation centre in Appledore and the Pioneers Regulator Fund to name but a few. We are in exciting times for the wider blue economy in the South West so I am hugely excited to be working with the team at MUKSW to take this forward.

I am also really pleased that Prof Chris Smith (University of Exeter), and Drystan Jones (Director Port Development Falmouth; Director, General manager, Falmouth Docks & Engineering Company, A&P Group), will now become Co-Chairs. Both Chris and I are also Directors of Marine Tech start-ups, while Drystan represents the largest ship repair complex in the UK.  Input from opposite ends of the business spectrum will ensure that Maritime UK South West is very much industry led, while also recognising the key role that our respective research organisations play in driving innovation.

Success for Global innovation project in the heart of Appledore with award of £15.6 million in Government Funding

Torridge District Council’s proposed Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre at Middle Dock was given a massive boost this week with £15.6m of funding from the Levelling Up Fund issued by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The centre, which has received backing from a range of globally innovative partners as well as government agencies such as the National Shipbuilding Office, will establish Torridge and wider northern Devon as a global-leading research and development destination for innovation in clean maritime technology and support industries.

Expected to open in 2025, the centre will feature cutting-edge research and industry partnerships from the Centre for Future Clean Mobility (CFCM, University of Exeter) and the University of Plymouth. Designs include flexibly-designed innovation workshops and offices to enable businesses to undertake sector-leading R&D in a collaborative, engaging atmosphere and interest has already been high.

Funding awarded to guide future autonomous and clean marine tech regulation

Plymouth’s role as a pioneering place for autonomous marine vessels and green technology has been given a financial boost from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The consortium led by the Council has been awarded £842,490 under the BEIS’s Regulators’ Pioneer Fund to develop a framework for testing autonomous and prototype maritime vessels for research and development.

New report identifies pathway for £75bn for UK shipping's energy transition

Recommendations on priority areas of focus are intended to contribute to the next iteration of the UK government’s Clean Maritime Plan:

  • Specific sectors of the UK maritime sector such as ferries, offshore service vessels and the offshore wind market present an opportunity for priority action and targeted measures
  • New sources of capital will be required to fund the industry’s decarbonisation transition
  • Institutional investors could be a viable source of funding with the appropriate government support
  • Specific funding mechanisms (illustrated through case studies) can help to overcome the barriers to investment

Report: Too risky’ to delay investment in safe and viable Net Zero fishing vessels - Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability

Delaying investment in net zero fishing vessels is a risky strategy, according to a new report we commissioned.
The study by Macduff Ship Design explains that net zero fuels are currently no match for diesel-powered fishing vessels, but failing to invest in this technology and the associated safety, training and infrastructure now could leave fleets unviable sooner than expected.
Naval Architect Duncan Boag reviewed three existing diesel fishing vessels to see if a new ‘net zero’ vessel using alternative fuels, power systems and drivetrains could replicate their capabilities. With help from Exeter University’s Centre for Future Clean Mobility, phase 2 of the study will go on to produce concept designs for these vessels utilising the most promising options. These concepts will help us understand the technical, regulatory and financial barriers preventing the uptake of new technology by the UK fishing industry.

Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII)

The UK has created the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII) – a collaborative initiative between the Catapult Network, National Physical Laboratory, Net Zero Technology Centre, the Aerospace Technology Institute and Advanced Propulsion Centre, spanning the end-to-end hydrogen system. HII which will identify innovation priorities, crowd in investment, pilot innovation support for businesses and generate enabling knowledge and capability. The consortium has been granted £6M over 2 years by Innovate UK to kick-start its efforts – this grant is referred to as HII’s ‘seed’ programme.

HII has a remit to look at cross-modal opportunity and a number of transport sectors. Maritime is a key focus of one of the seed activities – the consortium is working with industry, government and academia to identify and address sector innovation priorities.

The Hydrogen Innovation Initiative recently supported Associated British Ports to trial a hydrogen fuelled tractor in its container terminal at the Port of Immingham. Learning from the trial will be shared more widely across industry shortly and has already seen interest from an Indian trade delegation earlier in the month.

The Hydrogen Innovation Initiative also has seed activities on green hydrogen production with wind, hydrogen for domestic and industrial heating, cryogenics and hydrogen standards.

As a result of and in parallel to HII seed, HII is working to build consortia and crowd in investment to launch major joint industry programmes. If this is of interest to you please do reach out.
