The Maritime UK Newsletter is up for sponsorship for 2023. The monthly newsletter is an objective source of news and opportunity for the SW Ocean Economy and reaches over two thousand contacts in the ocean economy, mainly focussed around the SW. New Innovation Grant call for Devon-based Advanced Marine SMEs

Following highly successful previous rounds, the Marine Business Technology Centre is delighted to announce a new Innovation Grant call for Devon-based Advanced Marine SMEs.

Eligible businesses have the opportunity to receive 75% support for their innovation programmes up to a total project value of £4,000.00. Funding can be used for consultancy support, specialist time and scientific studies.

Closing date is the 31st March 2023 and projects need to be completed by 30th June 2023. Please note grants are limited and will be distributed on a first come first served basis.
 

Plymouth and South Devon Freeport first to be given the green light with Full Business Case approval

New employment land, new businesses, thousands of jobs and millions of pounds of investment is coming our way with the approval of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport Full Business Case announced by the government today.

Plymouth and South Devon Freeport is the first of eight Freeports to be given the full green light along with two others. The approval unlocks millions of pounds of grant seed funding and enables applicable businesses to join and take advantage of the Freeport status.

Supply chain opportunity for maritime: How the tide has turned on UK tidal stream energy as costs ebb and reliability flows

Less than 40 days to go until submissions for the 2023 Maritime UK Awards close!

The Maritime UK Awards are open to organisations from across the breadth of the maritime sector and its component shipping, ports, services, engineering, science, and leisure marine industries.

This year, a number of categories have been updated to include academic institutions, cadets, ratings and young professionals. The 14 award categories cover topics across the sector, including innovation, diversity, clean maritime, and international trade, to name a few.

Transport Research and Innovation Grant programme

Government has announced its latest round of Transport Research Innovation Grant (TRIG) funding, worth £1.85m. The funding could be awarded to as many as 60 projects to develop early stage research projects designed to support new ideas to create a better transport system.

The TRIG programme is delivered with the support of the Connected Places Catapult (CPC) and offers small grants of around £30,000 to projects which will prove a concept of new transport technologies.

Funding awarded to guide future autonomous and clean marine tech regulation

Plymouth’s role as a pioneering place for autonomous marine vessels and green technology has been given a financial boost from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The consortium led by the Council has been awarded £842,490 under the BEIS’s Regulators’ Pioneer Fund to develop a framework for testing autonomous and prototype maritime vessels for research and development.

National Careers Week Opportunity, Dartmoor Trust Careers Fair - 8th & 9th March 2022 – Ashbury Hotel, Okehampton

Maritime UK are working with Maritime UK South West to attend the Dartmoor Trust Careers Fair during National Careers Week. This event will be the largest of its kind in North and West Devon and will bring together students from a wide geographical area. Over 2500 students across years 9 – 12 are expected to attend.
It would be fantastic to have various Maritime stands at this event and showcase to the students the wide variety of opportunities available in the Maritime Sector and in particular in the South West.
This event is free to attend as the inaugural event, but the Dartmoor Multi-Academy Trust are accepting donations towards their running costs.

A New Strategy for the Celtic Sea Region to tap into Offshore Wind Potential

The Celtic Sea Cluster has launched its new Regional Strategy, outlining how Wales and South West England can maximise the economic benefits of floating offshore wind technology, in line with the forthcoming Celtic Sea leasing process being delivered by The Crown Estate. The strategy will allow the region’s stakeholders to ensure their activities are aligned and can achieve their common objectives.

Celtic Sea Cluster Workforce Working Group

  • Two parallel working groups have been set up under the floating offshore wind cluster
    • 1) “Demand” group, made up of developers and industry to articulate the requirements: number and type of job and when they will be required
    • 2) “Supply” group, of training providers and local stakeholders to prepare a pipeline of talent able to fulfil these requirements within the region.
  • Modelling work is now underway to map out this demand and how the supply can meet it. This will help form a regional strategy to maximise the number of skilled FLOW careers in the region.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
