Maritime UK SW Clean Maritime Roadmap Review Meeting, 9th Sept

In June 2020 organizations from across the South West came together, hosted by Maritime UK SW to create an action plan to shift the dial on clean maritime in the South West. Since that time considerable progress has been made in fulfilling the plan created, “Maritime UK SW Clean Maritime Roadmap“.

This face to face (with the option of MS Teams) meeting will be an opportunity for the network to review and re-plan further actions to be carried out in partnership. In addition an agenda has been pulled together to help organisations looking to advance clean maritime to network, learn more about what is happening and opportunities nationally and also to obtain funding to progress their plans.

Marine sector to benefit from more support from Marine Business Technology Centre

New funding means the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) in Plymouth will operate for another 12 months, providing valuable innovation support to businesses in the Devon. Based in Plymouth’s Oceansgate development, the MBTC has supported nearly 400 businesses since it was established in 2018.

The MBTC is a partnership led by Plymouth City Council with the Marine Biological Association (MBA), Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), the University of Plymouth and the University of Exeter.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme allows a businesses or not for profit organisations to partner with a UK education institution, research and technology organisation (RTO) or Catapult to deliver a specific, strategic innovation project.

New marine industry consortium aims to tackle composites recycling challenge

A new consortium has been formed to address the growing challenge of decarbonisation and recycling of composite materials in the marine industry and beyond, with a long-term aim of creating the UK’s first glass fibre composites recycling and re-use facility of its kind.  Led by Guernsey-based marine consultancy Blue Parameters, the ‘Blue Composites Project’ is supported by the National Composites Centre (NCC) and a number of the UK’s leading marine and maritime companies, composites specialists, academic institutions and local government organisations, with the aim to break ground in composites recycling and re-use to address the key environmental challenges facing the UK’s marine industry in its transition to zero emission shipping by 2050.

Plymouth Marine Laboratory has contributed to the eighth report in the series, which brings the marine and coastal community together to record changes in local seas.

Smart Sound Plymouth - MASG Seminar

Gain an insight into what exciting projects the Smart Sound Plymouth are working on and get an update on their Wolfson Foundation funding.

The Smart Sound facilitates trials, validation and proving of marine innovative technologies across a diverse environment. All missions will be facilitated by a dedicated team in compliance with MAS codes of conduct and de-conflicted with other water users. From trials in shallow benign environments to deeper hostile waters Smart Sound can facilitate a wide range of conditions to suit the user’s particular requirements.

Harland & Wolff awarded £55 million contract to regenerate former royal navy mine-hunting vessel

Harland & Wolff have been awarded a £55 million contract to regenerate an ex-Navy mine-hunting vessel, HMS QUORN.

John Wood, Group CEO of Harland & Wolff commented: “I am thrilled that we have been awarded the M55 Contract. This is a watershed moment.

Event: Natural Capital - Business and the Environment Working Together, 7th Sept

The event will focus on why our collective understanding of our environment is critical and also how we can engage in programmes that make a difference.

Stakeholders across business, academia, and governmental institutions from all over the world will converge to shape the future of maritime. This year’s event invites delegates to share ideas on smarter and greener solutions for maritime transport and to celebrate women’s work in marine science and technology.

MAAT - Marine Autonomy Project Survey

A new programme is in development, focused on supporting research, innovation and economic activity around Maritime Autonomy for the UK, and provide a platform to remove barriers to adoption of MAS. To help optimise the design of the programme and identify how best to support the Maritime Autonomy sector overall, the project leads are undertaking a survey.

£30 million Fast Start boost for cutting-edge start-ups; competition opens 11th July 2022

Competition opens 11th July 2022. Innovate UK is launching a brand new series of grants worth £30 million to back innovative UK businesses in fast-starting innovation and boosting the UK economy.

Fast Start: Innovation grants Innovate UK’s new series of Fast Start: Innovation grants will give hundreds of UK small and micro-businesses the opportunity to grow and realise their ideas faster.
These grants, of up to £50,000 each, will provide a fast way to boost cash flow, helping to propel those highly innovative ideas that have a clear route to commercialisation.

Regen’s new study in conjunction with University of Exeter’s Centre for Future Clean Mobility, outlines the technology innovation and economic growth opportunities that clean maritime propulsion systems can offer the UK and how the South West can capitalise on these opportunities to spearhead the growth of the sector.

Decarbonising Ports & Harbours

The Decarbonising of Ports & Harbours Innovation Network aims to convene a community that addresses the challenges of decarbonising, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and improving localised air quality. The desired end-result of the Innovation Network’s activity is a sector-led proposal for a government-industry partnership and stimulus package.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
