Maritime UK SW is a partnership supported and led by South West public, research and business organisations.  

The mission of Maritime UK SW is to bring together the breadth of our regional ocean economy, working in partnership to champion, grow and clean the sector.

Every year we publish our achievements in the past year and plans for next. This provides a workplan for partners interested in promoting themselves via cluster communications and also in partnering in cluster activity.

Event Northern Devon Marine - Floating Offshore Wind opportunities ahead 13th May

An event to raise awareness of the forthcoming Celtic Sea Floating Offshore Wind opportunities and the potential for your business to be part of a future supply chain. Hear from Regen (leading environmental consultants) about the outcomes of a detailed study into the potential for businesses opportunity across the SW to access the supply chain as well as Innovate UK, floating offshore wind and tidal stream energy developers and key industry bodies.

Green Tech Boatshow & Clean Marine Innovation showcase 16-18th June

Following the success of the first Green Tech Boat Show last year, the show will take place again this year at its Queen Anne’s Battery, Plymouth, 16-18 June 2022. In 2022 the first day of the Green Tech Boat Show will be focussed exclusively on clean marine innovation, “The Clean Marine Innovation Showcase” will create a unique forum for government, research and business to come together to exchange ideas, showcase new innovations, network and do business. On the agenda – UKShore a £130M programme to decarbonise maritime, Sail GP, Composite Recycling, investment masterclass, how to access R&D tax credits.

Horizon Europe Overview - draft 2023 calls

With a combined research budget of 15 billion Euro and a dedicated network to bring forward maritime innovation Horizon Europe is worth a look. The calls for 2022 will soon be submitted but we have a draft of what next years programme might look to help form ideas and partnerships for next years programme. 

Maritime UK Chair, Sarah Kenney to Open South Devon College £75M Marine Academy

The South Devon College Marine Academy is being officially opened on April 8 by Sarah Kenney, Chair of Maritime UK. On an historic former boat building yard, in Premier Marinas’ £75 million development on the banks of the River Dart, the new South Devon College Marine Academy opens its doors.

In the planning for 10 years this state-of-the-art facility at Noss on Dart aims to close the skills gap within the maritime industry and meet the demands of a changing marine and maritime sector

SailGP - Accelerating the Energy Transition

Championing a world powered by nature, SailGP is looking to accelerate marine innovation and decarbonisation technologies through its progressive ambition to have the entire race support fleet transitioned to be powered by clean energy by 2025.  

Sail GP will also be speaking at the Green Tech Boatshow on 16th June. 

Innovation Loans Future Economy Competition – Round 1

Innovate UK is offering up to £25 million in loans to micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Loans are for highly innovative late stage research and development (R&D) projects with the best potential for the future. There should be a clear route to commercialisation and economic impact.

Driving the Electric Revolution: Building Talent for the Future 2

UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £4.5 million for innovative skills, talent, and training projects for Power Electronics, Motors and Drives (PEMD). This funding is from the Driving the Electric Revolution challenge.

Energy Entrepreneurs Fund: phase 9

The Energy Entrepreneurs Fund (EEF) supports the development of technologies, products and processes in the areas of energy efficiency, power generation, heat generation, energy storage, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and security of supply.

Ports and Infrastructure: The keys to unlocking the potential for Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) in the Celtic Sea region

A recent article explains that the challenges for FLOW in the Celtic Sea are significant, especially to ensure that the benefits are enjoyed by the region. Ports and infrastructure are vital in this development and the coordinated approach being taken will be key to success.

Department for International Trade - Maritime Capability Campaign Office Webinar - 26th April

Maritime UK have organised a webinar to introduce member companies to the new Maritime Capability Campaign Office (a key deliverable of the National Shipbuilding Strategy). Set up with £12.5m funding, the MCCO will support the new National Shipbuilding Office to build on the maritime Export Strategy . It will collaborate with industry and across Government to coordinate export development and delivery activity from platforms to sub-systems, to supply chains. Additionally, it will support foreign direct investment into the maritime sector to accelerate opportunities, foster innovation and strengthen the capabilities of the UK’s supply chain.  

Call to Action: Maritime Masters Research Topics

The Maritime Masters programme, which links industry with current maritime masters students, is looking for companies and organisations to suggest research topics that the students can pursue. This is a wonderful opportunity for members and their members alike. If members have research topics please share using this form.

Dorset Engineering & Manufacturing Cluster: A Space to Collaborate in a Changing World

Breakfast Business Meeting at the newly opened MoD Defence BattleLab Innovation Centre, Dorset Innovation Park, Thursday 9th June 2022.

The BattleLab Innovation Centre provides a virtual and physical community, allowing collaborators the opportunity to access offices, conference rooms, 5G network and MoD end users, engineering workshop, testing ranges with cleared air and sea space.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
