Exeter Science Park has welcomed the latest business to its community – marine software engineering specialists Marine AI.
Marine AI specialises in edge-based artificial intelligence software designed to enhance maritime capabilities both above and below the water. The company takes up its new offices at the Science Park this month.
Edge-based artificial intelligence (AI) software refers to software that is designed to run on devices at the ‘edge’ of a network, such as smartphones, IoT devices, or embedded systems, as opposed to a central server or in the cloud. This proximity to data at its source delivers strong benefits, including faster insights, improved response times and disposing of the reliance for an ‘always on’ broadband type bandwidth availability.
Matthew Ratsey, managing director of Marine AI, said: “There are many benefits for a company like ours in moving to Exeter Science Park. We’re excited to be part of a vibrant, like-minded community; our company is also growing rapidly, and being based at the Science Park will aid recruitment, placing us closer to the University of Exeter and the talented graduates coming through.”
Marine AI is a subsidiary of Plymouth based MSubs, which itself is a subsidiary of US based Submergence Group, which designs, builds and operates leading-edge submersibles and underwater systems primarily for the US and Royal Navy. Among Marine AI’s UK projects has been the design and implementation of the software deployed on Mayflower – the autonomous vessel which successfully crossed the Atlantic in 2022. www.mas400.com
In addition, MarineAI has been selected by DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), in conjunction with Serco, for phase one of the US No Manning Required Ship (NOMARS) program, which ‘seeks to build and demonstrate a revolutionary new medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV) that can go to sea and perform missions with unprecedented reliability and availability’. Marine AI’s autonomous software solution is called GUARDIAN™ and uses artificial intelligence to enhance safety and control of both manned and unmanned vessels.
