Support for the self-employed

On 26 March the Chancellor announced the  Self-employment Income Support Scheme, which HMRC is working urgently to deliver. Grants are expected to start to be paid out by the beginning of June 2020.

Guidance for employers and businesses

This guidance will assist employers and businesses in providing advice to staff on what you need to know, what to do if someone develops symptoms, sick pay, dependant leave and limiting the spread.

Updates from the past week include:

  • Business rates holiday for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses
    The government has introduced a business rates holiday for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in England for the 2020 to 2021 tax year.  You do not need to do anything.  If this applies to your business your local authority will contact you as soon as possible, but you can also find more information on your local authority website.  Find your local authority.
  • New Technology Challenge Fund
    Funding of up to £25,000 per company is available for innovators who can find digital ways to support people who need help during the coronavirus outbreak. For information on the programme and how to apply, visit  techforce19.uk

PPE – can you help?
The NHS is calling for local businesses to help supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from stocks not in use. Find out how you can help supply PPE to the NHS here  PPE – Call for Assistance From Businesses

Broadband connectivity
Get the most from your broadband connection with  Connecting Devon and Somerset’s top tips  which are based on Ofcom advice.

Arts Council Emergency Funding
The Arts Council will offer individuals and organisations working in the cultural sector new financial support during the Covid-19 crisis. Applications open soon – find out more and sign up for updates at  Arts Council Covid-19 support.

Virtual Careers Fair
The  Virtual Career Fairs website  has been created to support those affected by redundancy and the closure of employers in the Heart of the South West. The website is being developed to include a job search function, news about job opportunities and (virtual)  events. It has been created in partnership with the Heart of the South West LEP and local authorities and is led by Devon County Council.

Be alert to the risk that in these challenging times there may be people wishing to take advantage. Please do not provide bank details over the telephone.  Find out about Covid-19 scams and what to do if you see something suspicious.

Farm help
Devon and Somerset farmers, if you are keen to find staff for your farm or you’re looking for farm work to keep the supply chain functioning, the Heart of the South West has some resources to help:  Farming, Agriculture and Rural Job Opportunities

Support for community organisations
Devon County Council have listed grants available for community organisations including grants for Devon organisations as well as UK-wide support. See  Grant and funding support  on the council website.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
