Maritime Minister opens Maritime UK SW Clean Maritime Summit

Opened by Robert Courts MP, the Under-Secretary of State for Transport, the Clean Maritime Summit 2021 highlighted existing innovations and initiatives that are already enabling the shift to cleaner ports, harbours and vessels in the South West. The group agreed to work together to produce a roadmap to shape activity. Businesses are encouraged to get in contact if they are interested in participating in subsequent workstreams.

Tidal Stream Supply Chain Events

Two supply chain webinars events are planned on the 10th and 15th June where project and technology developers from tidal stream sites across the Channel in France and the UK will share the details of their forthcoming development and procurement plans.

European Funding for Clean Maritime Innovation

A range of different innovation funding calls are currently available which are part of the Horizon Europe Framework Programme.
Calls Cover: high power fuel cells, on board power storage for ammonia and hydrogen, preventing methane slip from LNG engines, ammonia engine feasibility, digital twin models to enable green ship operation, sustainable fuel deployment, on-board energy saving, hyper powered vessel battery charging systems.

Export AR: sales tool using immersive 3D technology to connect UK exporters with overseas buyers and partners

Webinar to discover how the ExportAR: Marine platform is using Augmented Reality (AR) to revolutionise cross-border sales and boost UK exports in the sector, July 20th 1-hour.
ExportAR: Marine is a powerful new sales tool using immersive 3D technology to connect UK exporters with overseas buyers and partners. The technology, built by Render XR in partnership with the Department for International Trade and Business West is being trialled now within the Marine Sector.

Blue Abyss brings world’s biggest and deepest pool to Cornwall with £150m project

The world’s biggest and deepest pool for testing the latest underwater technology, helping advance subsea robotics and even training astronauts is being planned in Cornwall.

Blue Abyss, a £150 million facility which has the support of British astronaut Major Tim Peake, will be the world’s leading extreme environment research, test and training centre serving the offshore energy, marine, defence and space sectors.

City College Plymouth – Marine offer

Lance Chatfield, Faculty Director – Technology, Marine and Renewables provides an update on exciting developments including new facilities which are open to industry at Oceansgate Plymouth and a new curriculum due to start in September 2021.

Specialist Support for SW Marine Exporters

The Department for International Trade (DIT) have a marine sector specialist to help businesses across the Great South West (covering the Heart of the South West, Dorset and Cornwall & Isles of Scilly LEPs) looking to export their products and services internationally.

Safety Tech Accelerator

The Safetytech Accelerator, established by Lloyd’s Register, is now launching its Safetytech Proof of Concept Fund to support up to 8 flagship trials of innovative solutions to industrial safety and operational risk challenges.  If you are an operator in maritime, food or clean energy,  this is an opportunity for you to get involved  and help us define and shape a priority area that is relevant to you

Innovate UK Smart Grants

Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme.
Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. All proposals must be business focused.

The Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration Program

The Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration Programme is a new funding call which has been announced by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). It reflects the UK Government’s target for floating offshore wind to deliver 1GW of energy by 2030.

Innovation Challenge from the Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) are sponsoring this challenge which is looking to track underwater species behaviour and movements in and around tidal stream turbines.

Smart Port Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Development

The Interreg SPEED (Smart Port Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Development) Project was a finalist in the World Ports Sustainability Awards 2021 Resilient Digital Infrastructure category. The collaborative project has developed tools and resources to bring together port stakeholders and innovative technology businesses to boost operational excellence. Ports and tech entrepreneurs in the South West can access support initially through contacting Sharon Jones at BCP Council.

 

Marine-I supports new mooring system for Falmouth Harbour

Marine-i has announced its support for a pioneering new mooring system for use in Falmouth Harbour. Such a system would help to increase the operating capacity in the harbour, without the need for large-scale infrastructure development. This project, led by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, intends to meet the challenge of anchoring very large vessels or platforms without the requirement of very large capacity lifting vessels

Maritime ambassadors network – go on sign up!

Maritime UK currently have 121 ambassadors registered for the programme and we are determined to increase that number. You are asked only to give one hour a year to the scheme as a minimum. You might be requested to support schools or colleges at one off events, or over time you might carry out a series of events building up a relationship with a single organisation.

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
