This week there are a number of new exciting digital initiatives for young people with live lessons from TechWeCan, a new government Cyber School and a Video Game challenge launching on the 4th of May from Sidequest.

Learn Devon, Devon County Council’s Adult Education team will launch over 100 free online courses today. We have also included information on the new national Skills Toolkit which was launched this week by  HM Government.

New Free Government Virtual Cyber School for Teenagers launches  today

Teenagers  (13 – 18 years)  in the UK can sign up to the government’s new virtual cyber school to try their skills as cybersecurity agents.

The virtual cyber school is part of the government’s CyberFirst  Cyber Discovery  programme;  a free, online extracurricular programme which turns teenagers across the country into the cybersecurity experts of the future.

With access to over 200 cybersecurity challenges and weekly webinars, teenagers will be able to learn how to crack codes, fix security flaws and dissect criminals’ digital trails as they progress through the programme as a  ‘cyber agent’.

CyberFirst Summer Courses

The exciting launch of the free CyberFirst Discovery Programme comes as the government also announces the opening of the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) hugely popular  CyberFirst summer courses. This year’s programme of summer courses will be available online and open to teenagers between  14 – 17 years old.[gap height=”30px”]

Tech We Can Tuesdays

The Tech We Can team is hosting free online tech lessons for kids aged 10-13 years  every Tuesday at 10.30am.

Each lesson has a different theme with the aim of inspiring  children to consider a future career in technology.

The lessons are approximately  20 – 30 minutes long and aim to be fun and informative, focusing on the use of technology in our everyday lives.  For each lesson students are set a challenge to complete in the hour or so following the lesson.

SideQuest Youth Games Competition

SideQuest is a new initiative to get  13-19 year olds  to learn a range of key practical and workplace skills during lockdown through designing and building video games.

Participants will be able to take part remotely, with free software, curriculum mapped worksheets, online tutorials and a community of fellow game builders on the social platforms Twitch and Discord.

How it works?

SideQuest is for any teenager that wants to learn to build a video game. Starting on the 4th of May, they will release a new challenge to build a game in 7 days with online streams and tuition from industry professionals (set for 3 pm each day so you don’t even have to get up early!)[gap height=”30px”]

Institute of Coding – Summer School

The Institute of Coding Summer School is open for registrations!

This year’s Summer School will be delivered online and take place between  22nd June – 10th July.

The Institute of Code summer school is open to all UK-based undergraduate or postgraduate students who are interested in learning the fundamentals of computer programming and social data analytics. You do not need to be studying a technology-based course all you need is a desire to challenge yourself be keen to know more about coding.Deadline for registration has been extended until  10th May.

Learn Devon Launch Online Courses

Learn Devon are launching a range of free online courses today (Friday 1st  May) in response to the Coronavirus outbreak to build and improve skills and help our communities with their wellbeing and mental health.

Choose from more than 100 free courses including a wide range of digital skills courses.

UK Government Launch The Skills Toolkit

This week the government launched The Skills Toolkit, which allows adults to access free, high-quality online courses whilst at home.

The courses are split into introductory, intermediate and advanced and ranging from Video Calling and CV preparation through to Programming in Python and Cyber Security.

With 82% of all job vacancies requiring digital skills and roles that require them paying 29% more than those that don’t, and against a backdrop in recent years of the number of digital jobs growing three times as quickly as other occupations – this new toolkit from HM Government is great  for anyone looking to build their skills for the future!

Beatfreeks – Be Internet Citizens

Beatfreeks, powered by Google.org, are delivering  free  e-safety training sessions for teachers and youth workers.

The interactive webinar aims to equip teachers and youth workers with the tools to empower young people to be safe users of the web and encourage them to be positive voices online – essential skills during unprecedented times where online activity is increasing and fake news is prevalent.

Taking part qualifies as  Continuing Professional Development (CPD)  for all teachers and youth workers. Each participant will come away with:

  • a copy of  PSHE accredited resources  which includes five session plans
  • a copy of supplementary resources  suitable for remote teaching  during the COVID – 19 pandemic

      David Ralph

      Chief Executive

      David Ralph started as Chief Executive of Heart of South West LEP at the beginning of June 2018. Previously, he had spent 5 years as CEO of the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire (D2N2) LEP from 2013 where he oversaw the development of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan and sector strategies, 3 Growth Deals with HM Government to deliver a £1billion capital investment programme, securing and implementing £200m ESIF programme, the Derby and Nottingham Enterprise Zone, the D2N2 Skills Deal and Time for Innovation programme, community fund and led the executive team to develop the HS2 East Midlands hub. He was also closely involved in the proposed North Midlands Devolution Deal and one of the key architects in establishing the Midlands Engine, chairing the officer steering group. Whilst in this role David was a NED of the Nottingham Enterprise Zone, and Marketing NG, the Outer Estates Foundation and a Governor of Nottingham College and on the advisory Board of Nottingham Business School.

      Before the East Midlands, David was CEO of the Have Gateway Partnership working closely with local stakeholders including the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Ipswich and BT Adadastral Park across Suffolk and Essex and prior to that was Chief Exec of the Barton Hill New Deal for Communities programme in Bristol and the Nelm Development Trust in Norwich.

      David is a keen sailor, walker and trail runner.
